What is ONVIF?
ONVIF (Open Network Video Interface Forum) is a forum for the development of a global standard for the interface of network video products. It was formed as a non-profit organisation by CCTV manufacturers in November 2008.ONVIF is committed to the adoption of network video in the security market. The ONVIF specification will ensure interoperability between network video products regardless of the manufacturer. The cornerstones of ONVIF are:
- Standardisation of communication between network video devices
- Interoperability between network video products regardless of manufacturer
- Open to all companies and organizations
The ONVIF specification defines a common protocol for the exchange of information between network video devices including automatic device discovery, video streaming and intelligence metadata.
Benefits of ONVIF
A global interface standard will make it even easier for end users, integrators, consultants and manufacturers to take advantage of the possibilities offered by network video technology.- End Users
- Increased flexibility and greater freedom of choice. The standard enables end users to select interoperable products from a variety of different brands that comply with the ONVIF standard.
- Future-proof systems and more secure investments. The standard will ensure that interoperable products are available from a large variety of vendors, no matter how the market develops.
- Reduced total cost of ownership. Interoperable products result in less integration costs, and enable end-users to choose the most suitable combination of network video products for their specific needs, regardless of vendor.
- Integrators & Consultants
- Interoperability between different vendor’s products making it simple to offer cost-effective and flexible solutions.
- Simplified installation of network video products regardless of brand.
- Greater freedom to specify a system with products from different vendors, thus making it easier to fully meet the specific needs of various customers.
- Manufacturers & Software Vendors
- Interoperability with network video products from a wide range of manufacturers without loosing the ability to differentiate products from the competition.
- Increased market interest for network video products and IP-based security/surveillance solutions.
- Extended market opportunities as the products/software easily can be used as a part of a network video solution globally.
- Reduced in-house development costs through implementation of established standards.
